Artistic Intervention and Social Critique: A Dialogue in the Inter-Asian Context

The International Institute for Cultural Studies, National Chiao Tung University, will hold a two-day workshop: “Artistic Intervention and Social Critique: A Dialogue in the Inter-Asian Context” on December 8th and 9th, 2017. The objective of this workshop is to explore the immense potentialities of artistic practices in relation to their function of social intervention and social critique, to bridge intellectual labors and artistic labor, and to exchange ideas and practices of contemporary artistic works in the inter-Asian context.

We have invited artists and curators across different regions of Asia to share with us the following topics: How did their artistic work address contemporary social issues? What are the critical issues they have addressed in their projects? What are the historical, geo-political and social contexts behind their problematics? What are the visions they hope to achieve through their projects? What are the difficulties they have confronted? In short, how do they define their artistic and curatorial practices?

From the problematics of these artists, we have gathered a list of keywords: artist’s battlefield, art activism, bio-politics, gentrification, the proper and the improper, social stratification, multitude, art and history, art and education, art and space, language, ideologies, identities and knowledge regimes, aesthetic, discursive and knowledge production, the question of the South, histories of Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, geopolitical method, social art, public art, people’s art (Minjung Art), participatory art, art action, conceptual art, video art, documentary method, poetic and artistic response to social reality, etc.

By bringing these various themes into dialogue we intend to shape a cross-disciplinary knowledge production. Thus we welcome your engagement and participation from all different disciplinary backgrounds.
