2013年度講座：Partha Chatterjee

 

帕沙‧查特吉（Partha Chatterjee）教授是聞名全球庶民研究學派(Subaltern Studies)創始成員，國際知名的政治理論家，在印度及國際學術思想界享有很高的聲望， 是亞洲在世界範圍內最有影響力的思想家之一。他2000年以國科會講座身分訪台所舉辦的「發現政治社會—現代性、國家暴力與後殖民民主」系列演講討論（講座紀錄於2000年台北巨流出版）， 在學界引發熱烈的討論，提出了具有高度原創性的「政治社會」論，在後殖民世界廣受重視，開啟了貼近第三世界自身歷史狀況的政治分析與運動策略。 這次受到2012年方成立之台灣聯合大學系統文化研究國際中心之邀請，擔任首任年度講座，以「Empire and Nation」 (帝國與國族)為下列之演講主題， 提出殖民狀況的例外性(colonial exception)，來鋪陳18世紀起殖民主義的運作邏輯，其實建立在以自身的思維丈量殖民地狀況來開脫殖民者得以用「例外」來正當化自身的利益； 這是對當前全球政治統攝（global governmentality）提出具有原創性的歷史解釋，這樣歷史化的理論方式相信將受到台灣與國際學界另一波的重視， 衝擊國際政治霸權邏輯的正當性。

帕沙‧查特吉教授1947年出生於加爾各答，他是繼承以泰戈爾為代表之現代孟加拉的文化和知識傳統，至今仍堅持用孟加拉語書寫，並堅持以加爾各答為基地， 未脫離印度獨立之今的語境。他1967年於加爾各答大學畢業後，赴美國羅徹斯特大學攻讀政治學，1971年取得博士學位，1973年起就職於加爾各答著名之社會科學研究中心， 1997至2007年擔任該中心主任，目前為該中心之榮譽政治學教授。他曾在美國、歐洲、澳大利亞多所大學擔任訪問教職，目前也是紐約哥倫比亞大學人類學教授， 每年秋季班都會在哥大人類學系開設講座。

查特吉教授的成名作《民族主義思想和殖民地世界》Nationalist Thought and the Colonial World: A Derivative Discourse? (London: Zed Books; Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1986; Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1993)呈現的是各種學術領域的合流，該書對於民族主義與殖民主義之間在具體歷史過程中複雜的糾結關係的處理， 提供了民族主義研究的新觀點，迫使研究者不能再將民族主義視為一種相對自主的力量，而必須與在地歷史傳統、殖民史、以及階級、性別結構等相結合才能具有解釋力。 除了學術研究之外，政治評論也是查特吉教授寫作的一個主要的部分，針對特定的事件在報章雜誌上面對廣大的讀者，從一九七0年代至今沒有中斷。除此之外， 多才多藝的他在加爾各答是知名的劇作家與演員，他將思想融入公共生活。從寫作的維度來看，他的視野的活力來自於是幾個層次操作、辯證的結果： 加爾各答在地、孟加拉地區、印度與南亞、紐約。

值得一提的是，九0年代中期查特吉對「我們的」現代性的思索，從「雙語知識分子」(bilingual intellectual)自省的困境中，重新認識現代性其實不是一套普遍主義的價值觀， 而是高度脈絡性的過程，不同的地方有其自身的問題意識，面對當前所處的知識狀況；在查特吉自身的脈絡中，雙語意味著久遠的孟加拉語以及英語， 而事實上在印度能夠用英語操作的人口大都是社會的上層，透過英語取得的知識，造成與「母語」的人之口間造成了脫落與銜接的大問題。

查特吉教授以作為聞名世界的庶民研究學派創立成員，通過與其他成員的互動，自1980年初期起，深受歷史與人類學方法的影響，走向了跨領域研究的方向。 他的成名作《民族主義思想和殖民地世界》被視為研究第三世界民族主義理論的經典作品。The Nation and Its Fragments: Colonial and Postcolonial Histories （Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1993）這本書透過歷史的分析，釐清國族與其他社會力量的接合點，特別是對照殖民時期與後殖民階段的連續與斷裂。 其他作品包括：A Possible India: Essays in Political Criticism（Delhi: Oxford University Press,1997）、 A Princely Imposter? The Strange and Universal History of the Kumar of Bhawal (2001, Princeton University Press)，結合了文學性的歷史敘述與分析， 講述了殖民時期印、孟分立前的孟加拉的故事、《被治理者的政治—思索大部分世界的大眾政治》 The Politics of the Governed: reflections on Popular Politics in Most of the World（New York: Columbia University Press, 2004; 廣西師大,2007）、 The Black Hole of Empire: History of a Global Practice of Power（Princeton: Princeton University Press,2012）、 近期的選輯為Empire and Nation (Columbian University Press, 2010), Lineages of Political Society: Studies in Postcolonial Democracy (Permanent Black, 2011)。 這位南亞首席位置的思想者受到學界集中討論的專書有Theorizing the Present: Essays for Partha Chatterjee (Delhi: Oxford University Press, 2009)、 Re-framing Democracy and Agency in India: Interrogating Political Society (London: Anthem Press, 2012)。

目前為止查特吉教授著作的中譯本有三本，包括首次於2000年獲國科會講座補助，邀請他至清大外文系訪問後所集結出版的《發現政治社會—現代性、國家暴力與後殖民民主》 （台北巨流），2011年南京譯林的《民族主義思想與殖民地世界》、廣西師大的《被治理者的政治—思索大部分世界的大眾政治》，以及配合去年甫成功落幕的 「變動中的世界，變動中的想像，2012年亞洲思想界上海論壇」所出版的《後/殖民知識狀況：亞洲當代思想讀本》（世紀出版）當中收錄了他兩篇專文。

查特吉教授的在地性也是被印度廣大知識界認定為當代最受尊敬的學者/知識份子，因為他有相當多的作品是介入在地公共議題的討論或是知識圈的辯論。 查特吉教授也用孟加拉語寫作，已出版過兩本用孟加拉語寫成的評論文集《歷史遺產》（Itihaser uttaradhikar）（2000）和《物件與系統》(Praja o tantra)（2005）。 他更是一位著名劇作家。他用孟加拉語創作了六部戲劇作品並最後公演，其中包括1985年的《羅摩尼提》（Ramnidhi）和1995年的《今天的無稽之談》（Ajker Hajabarala）。

帕沙‧查特吉教授在國際學術思想界具有相當高的聲望，他曾於2009年獲頒日本「福岡亞洲文化獎」（福岡アジア文化賞）學術研究類獎項。 該獎項具有十分崇高之國際地位，因此本次十分榮幸能邀請他來台訪問。
